Winter's Gate
(The Manor)
Balmung || Empyreum || Ward 16 Subdivision || Plot 56

On one of the southern edges of Ishgard's new Empyreum district lies a modestly-sized manor which was originally commissioned by House Vallemont for occupation by the son of an esteemed noble of the dragoon order. Named "Winter's Gate" after an old, old Ishgardian legend which tells of a perilous northern mountain pass through which only the strongest of warriors could cross. When successfully navigated during a winter storm, the pass was said to lead one straight into the halls of the Fury herself.Upon the untimely passing of the intended heritor, however, Knight Commander Vallemont instead bequeathed the manor to a knight dragoon outside of his family; on the condition it be used as a base of operations for an organization in service of 'the new Ishgard'. This may prove to be a rather unorthodox and controversial decision; as the recipient is rumored to have had quite a turbulent military record - and is not of Ishgardian heritage, besides.Still, the newly-appointed overseer of the estate - and the Sky Vigil military organization headquartered within - has demonstrated much promise as a field commander in the Grand Company of Eorzea; and thus has vowed to make full use of the facility to uphold Ishgard's commitments of honorable service to the Alliance, its people, and the star at large.

(the long and short of it)

The Sky Vigil is a FFXIV RP group with a central focus on Ishgardian military RP with a lawful good leaning. While understandably niche, interest has been expressed by enough people to give validity to the concept, and we hope to build a modestly-sized community of people with shared interests in the western-styled high/dark fantasy after which this region of Eorzea is modeled. The group is founded upon several core tenets which are intended to support a unique identity among other RP groups, preserve the integrity of a shared story, respect the effort invested by fellow players, and overall foster an immersive experience of life in Ishgard with its culture of rigid military tradition and dogma.
If you are interested, the foundational elements of this group are outlined and can be viewed using the interactive section below:
And while these are significant cornerstones, above all else there prevails an even more fundamental principle:
This group is member-driven.
This project will live or die solely upon the initiative of its members. No one individual member or group of members is expected to carry this collaborative story via their efforts alone. This does not mean that all members are expected to arrange or run full events. Not everyone is comfortable with such a task, and that's okay! There are other ways members can drive activity: simply invite another member to RP, announce your character's presence at a location (a 'pop-up'), send an IC letter...challenge someone to a duel! There are places where one can simply wait - largely inactive - until they receive a ping from an event organizer with hand-delivered content ready to go. This is not one of them.

The Short
We are RPing an Ishgardian group. Ishgard is strict and - for some - brutal.
RP content will range between high/dark fantasy and lighthearted; avoiding extremes.
The Long
This one is the most obvious but is worth highlighting, regardless. The Sky Vigil is based IC, OOC, in-game, and otherwise in the city of Ishgard. This is a heavily stratified city with dramatic division of social classes, widely pervasive religion, and a deeply-rooted warrior culture.More broadly, it is strongly influenced by European high and dark fantasy (knights, kings, and dragons; politics; often grim tone) while still existing in the world of FFXIV, with its loosely-defined magic and frequent dips into cartoonish humor. The RP content of this group can be expected to involve all of the above topics, while wafting in tone between dark and lighthearted and not going to absolute extremes in either direction. Also, this means your character should expect to spend a lot of time in Ishgard and the Coerthas / Dravania regions!
And while these are significant cornerstones, above all else there prevails an even more fundamental principle:
This group is member-driven.

IC actions will have IC consequences.
Expect military content: plot, combat, training.
Expect military culture: rankings, rules, structure.
You decide your character's rank.
This is IC only; players will not flex authority.
We will not police the characters of players outside this group without their consent.
The Long
The Sky Vigil is a military organization. Members can expect content focused on plot, combat, military operations (both single missions and long-term campaigns), training, and the like. While there will most definitely be a significant social aspect, the group is decidedly not a tavern, performance venue, or night club; nor is it a mercenary organization. Expect a hierarchical structure, rankings, chain of command, occasional use of uniforms, adherence to procedure, and perhaps a bit more bureaucracy than a typical adventurers' guild. Also, expect IC consequences for any infractions commensurate with the nature of the violation, up to and including dismissal of the character from the organization. In other words, IC actions have IC consequences! The purpose of these aspects is absolutely not for a player to exercise authority over another player in an OOC manner. Rather, the intent is to foster an immersive atmosphere and more closely recreate the experience of life in such a severe society.Rankings and disciplinary action will be IC only. For example, if your character is already a knight captain upon joining, then they are a knight captain in the Sky Vigil. If you are interested in your character having an IC opportunity to be promoted to a new rank or to become a knight, please express your interest and we can have fun building an opportunity for that to happen!OOC, however, there will be no hierarchy other than Kainen performing administrative functions as the operator of the FC and the Discord. Players will be expected to follow the server rules and otherwise exercise common decency, but they will definitely not be held to oppressive military standards. The Sky Vigil is also an 'outward-facing' organization. In other words, they undertake missions which are more closely in line with Isghard's involvement in the Grand Company of Eorzea; security of the nation and its regions from outside threats. Think 'army' versus 'police'. While the group may sometimes be issued domestic tasks, they are not expected to police the citizenry (and especially not the characters of players outside this group without prior OOC communication between players).
And while these are significant cornerstones, above all else there prevails an even more fundamental principle:
This group is member-driven.

The group supports the current progressive government and is lawful overall.
This does not mean we will only accept lawful characters.
Characters are not judged by their inner motivations or their pasts. Characters are judged by their actions in the Sky Vigil.
The nature or origin of a character's powers do not matter, as long as they use these powers to support the group.
Active infractions will have consequences. All consequences are IC.
The Long
The Sky Vigil is established as a part of Lord Commander Aymeric's grander initiatives to reconstruct Ishgard in ways both concrete and ideological, and its leadership supports these initiatives in the interest of the well-being of the citizenry of Ishgard and her allies. As such, the overall direction of the organization's actions will be in accordance with the law of the nation and toward the good of the people - in theory. This does not mean that the group will only accept lawful good characters. In fact, differences in alignment, opinions, values, and goals is one of the key factors in creating compelling narrative conflict. The intent here is to establish the principles which govern the organization IC so players can better predict the type of experience their character can expect to have within it.Perhaps the most important factor to keep in mind here is that the organization only knows what your character provides and otherwise demonstrates. A character could secretly be a criminal, scoundrel, or taboo-breaker. They may not agree with the values of Ishgard at large, they could have ulterior motives, or they could wield heretofore forbidden powers. What ultimately matters is their actions within and as a representative of the organization. If a character's actions and behavior support the goals of the Sky Vigil and do not place the organization or the safety of its members in jeopardy, they will be treated as a valued member regardless of their individual alignment. If a character's actions are a detriment to the organization or its members, they may be subject to commensurate and logical consequences, up to and including dismissal.Situations are always evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and consequences are always IC. It is always understood that a character's actions are not a reflection of the player; however we ask that the same courtesy be extended to the organization itself. In order to maintain the integrity of other players' narratives and experiences, consequences of a character's behavior will be in accordance with the logic of the in-game world, and any infractions committed by a character will not be accommodated in a way which is implausible.

This group is member-driven.

Membership criteria is quite welcoming. A character does not need to be: highborn, noble, a knight, Ishgardian, or a combat class.
We can help devise a reason for your character to transfer to this division, if needed/desired.
A character is welcome to be in the in-game FC, but it is not required.
The Long
Though the Sky Vigil is part of the Ishgardian military and receives orders down the chain of command from Lord Commanders Aymeric and Lucia, it is an organization formed out of members of the Grand Company of Eorzea under the House of Commons and thus, it is not beholden to a particular High House and operates independently from the traditional Temple Knights. This means that membership criteria is much less exclusive.Characters can be highborn or lowborn, knights or commonfolk, Ishgardian or foreign. Characters also do not need to have a combat function. Tradespeople, administrative personnel, etc are all welcome and can even be full members! The intent is to significantly diversify our cast of characters, as well as to open the Ishgardian experience to more people - knights or not.If your character is a member of another military division, but you would like them to become a full member of the Sky Vigil, we can work out a transition! During such a time of grand and sweeping social change, a Temple or House knight could feasibly be given extended or permanent release from their oath to join up with this division of the new House of Commons, for example. Members will be given room and board, if needed, and can live fully at the estate or come-and-go from their own homes; whatever is preferable for them.Characters do not need to be part of the FC in-game to be a full member of the Sky Vigil. Characters from other servers and worlds are more than welcome to join. If a character that belongs to the group is on Balmung and you would like to create a room in the estate or enjoy any other FC perks, though, please let Kainen know and we are happy to get them added!

Our lore policy is: 'Plausible' or 'Supplementary'. It is not extremely strict, but there are some limitations.
No WoL characters or god-tier power levels.
Character concepts should not have the potential to invalidate another's character concepts.
Custom classes, unique abilities, and interesting backstories are accepted and appreciated.
Considering how vague and metaphysical things get in the actual game lore, there is a lot of flexibility here.
In the end, everything is case-by-case and at the discretion of existing members.
You will not be asked to explain your character or give away spoilers. We trust you.
The Long
The dreaded lore adherence section.'Lore-plausible', or 'lore-supplementary', is meant to be a middle ground between strict adherence and lore-bending. RP content in this group can - and likely will - venture into territory which is founded in existing canon, but then evolves into its own story. As long as the story and elements therein remain well within the realm of plausibility, they are permitted. The concept of the Sky Vigil, itself, is an example of this put into practice. Ishgard has not yet been shown to have established a military division independent of the church in-game. But they have been shown as establishing a separate parliamentary house, and otherwise making moves to separate church and state. This idea is extended and iterated upon via the foundation of this group; which acts as a plausible supplement to the existing in-game world. These kinds of concepts are welcome in this group. To claim that Ishgard dissolved the Temple Knights completely, however, would be taking things a step too far.The same will apply to character concepts. Playing in the empty 'what if' spaces of existing canon in creative ways is allowed - welcome, even - on the condition the concept is fleshed out, well-reasoned, can be explained, and most importantly: does not have the potential to invalidate another character's.You will not be asked to reveal or explain your character concept or their every detail upon joining, of course; because discovery is half of the fun! This information is simply presented ahead of time with the intent of helping prospective members feel comfortable in sharing their ideas. This topic is ultimately subjective, though, and there is no way to cover every possibility in a single blanket statement. In the end, the degree to which a particular concept is engaged is at the discretion of the existing group members; however, current members are known to be quite relaxed on things such as custom classes, unconventional abilities, unique backstories, and the like. On the other hand, extreme examples such as WoL / godmode characters, or other things which very directly conflict with FFXIV story are largely not permitted. Please ask if you are unsure!
And while these are significant cornerstones, above all else there prevails an even more fundamental principle:
This group is member-driven.

Get Involved
For the time being, full membership in the Sky Vigil is by invite only. However, we are still more than happy to RP with non-members, invite others to our manor and our public events, and collaborate with other groups. If you are interested in potentially becoming a member of the Sky Vigil group, all you have to do is...RP with us! Our group is made up of characters who were connected IC before ever joining the organization, and those organic IC connections are worth far more than any form submission. For opportunities to get involved, keep an eye out for any of our public events, or check the Roster section of this site for links to each member's individual pages. See who your character would best connect with, and reach out!We fully acknowledge and understand that this kind of group is not for everyone; and if you are not interested in joining, that is okay! We do not intend to be particularly insular and are still happy to RP with you and members of other groups; so please do not let this stop you from reaching out to an individual member to RP outside of Sky Vigil activity!
